Helotes is a vibrant community boasting a flourishing economy and a high quality of life. Located in northwest San Antonio and highway 1604 with easy access to other major highways, Helotes is a town with a unique name. Pronounced Hel-oh-tis, it is derived from the Spanish word elote meaning “corn-on-the-cob” and was originally a stagecoach stop and post office for cowboys driving their cattle between San Antonio and Bandera. It evolved into a farming community and was then incorporated into San Antonio in 1981. The John T. Floore Country Store, a honky tonk dance floor built in 1946, still draws top talent such as Willie Nelson.
Old Helotes, Helotes Creek Winery and the Cornyval Festival are other big draws for locals and crowds passing thru. The town is minutes away from prime shopping and entertainment at La Cantera, where you can find all of your favorite stores. The Rim, Bandera Pointe and Fiesta Texas are all nearby. The University of Texas at San Antonio is in the area as well. Houses range from $200,000 into the millions with the median single-family home being priced at $245,000. Popular neighborhoods include Adobe Ranch Acres, Sonoma Ranch, Hearthstone Ranch, Helotes Crossing, Reserve at Sonoma Verde, Iron Horse Canyon and many more. The Northside Independent School District has a positive reputation and serves all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
